<span lang="en-CA">Sorry if I’m being
late to reveal theme 05, but I’ve been very busy in the last days.
Theme 05 will be “HORROR”. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA">Do we feel at home with this theme?
Yes, we could say so. Orgasmo Sonore project has already been devoted
to the classic music of horror cult films over its 3 first albums. We
are now well acquainted with the works Fabio Frizzi, Goblin or
Stelvio Cipriani with some of the best horror film soundtracks of the
70s. But let’s try not to fall easily in the comfort zone here. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
This is the comfort zone (one of my favorite horror soundtrack) :</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://ytimg.googleusercontent.com/vi/5m7xLa6bkMQ/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5m7xLa6bkMQ?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA">What if we take this theme on a pure musical sense? What kind of
music, what type of piece of music could best represent this theme
“Horror”? What direction do I give to this one? There seems to be
so many possibilities, not so easy finally. I sure want to avoid the
use of random odd synthesizer patches, low frequency drone and loudly
reverbed drums, we hear enough of this in the current uninspired
style of horror soundtracks.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA">I’d rather like to
point out to the work of one particular composer that is maybe one of
the most important influences of horror music, maybe you know his
name, maybe not. You certainly know is music as it’s been used in
important films like Exorcist and Shinning. I’m talking about the Polish composer <b>Krzysztof Penderecki.</b></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA">I want to
immediately say that I will not compose a Penderecki-like piece of
music for the theme 05. I don’t have this capacity and I’m far
from his genius. But I like to root each of my themes into something
specific and Penderecki deserves a mention here for his contribution
to some of the most out-of-this-world music and horrifying sounds that an
orchestra of classical instruments can produce, and this without the
use of synthesizers or soundscaping techniques. </span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA">One of his
masterpieces, Threnody, was composed in 1960 and dedicated to the victim
of Hiroshima. Horror of war. For this, he use very large section of
strings and create wall of sounds by assigning each player on one
note creating a cluster effect. Like it or not, his music never let anybody indifferent,
it’s pure horror of dissonance. In the example below (video), you can follow the strange
notations to see how organised his chaos was. But just replace the
notation with a slightly horrific image, and you have horror power
10.</span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span lang="en-CA">Even with some of
the pieces he made, and the fact many of his music was used in
Exorcist and Shinning, we may overlook his real influences in the way
music for horror movie is made today. Even the modern low frequency
drone we hear so much in way of atmospheric climaxes may originated from the effect of his cluster strings technique.</span></div>

This theme will be so much fun to make! Turkish Psychedelic is a sub genre from the 70s originating from… hey you guessed it: Turkey. And I loooove it !<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VRr9dAQpcbg/VODB-uGjVOI/AAAAAAAAAUk/isX264sKwXI/s1600/photo-53.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VRr9dAQpcbg/VODB-uGjVOI/AAAAAAAAAUk/isX264sKwXI/s1600/photo-53.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Psychedelic Turk is a result of the western music influences of the 70s (Led Zepellin, Jimi Hendrix, Doors, etc…) on the anatolian culture, resulting in one of the most grooviest blend of folkloric and traditional local flavors with classic rock, fuzz guitar and funky beats. Some people will talk about a westernization of the local culture and music, but they are wrong. It's in fact really an "easternization" of the popular music of the west, where a bunch of Anatolian artists from the time appropriated themselves with the codes and styles of the British and American rock bands, and turned them into their own cultural canvas with typical folkloric instruments, percussions and music scales of the east. The result is called "Turkish Psych" for good reason as it is literally mind blowing, not heard anywhere else and that makes the Led Zep song Kashmir sounds like a mere attempt to incorporate eastern scale into rock when you hear how sounds the real thing.<br />
<br />
To begin with some listening recommendations, you can't go wrong with this song by <span style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; line-height: 18px;">Barış Manço</span> Lambaya Puf De. The Frank Zappa looking <span style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; line-height: 18px;">Barış Manço</span> is pointing at you on the cover sleeve like he is saying "Hey you, are you looking for some hashish? Well, listen to this first". Indeed, Lambaya Puf De, "The Lamp Trick", is quite a trip, and when it gets fast at the end, you get the essence of Psychedelic Turk and you may get up on your feet and start to do some exotic dancing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://ytimg.googleusercontent.com/vi/SpeNcnSknRo/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/SpeNcnSknRo?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
In number 2 of my personal list, you have <b>Erkin Koray</b>, the coolest turtleneck wearing rocker ever, with the song Cemalin from the album <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;">Elektronik Türküler</span>, a 8 minutes hypnotic rock groove that I swear you will become addicted only after a few listening. The way he looks at you at 1 : 20 and the strange words he sings, damn, what is going on, I feel strange and dizzy!<br />
<br />
(apprently Blogger doesn't let me put directly the Youtube video, so here's the link)<br />
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0gjwpMb-k8">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0gjwpMb-k8</a><br />
<br />
And finally, another favorite of mine is the hip looking Zafer Dilek who gets even more deeper into instrumental turkish melodies and beats, not afraid to blend some spacey moog leads and that's why we love the 70s so much! In the second video, it's wah wah guitar, traditional instruments with fuzz and busy percussions and drums fills, man it's so good!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://ytimg.googleusercontent.com/vi/IfW3VrwNgmw/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/IfW3VrwNgmw?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />

<br />
So for this one, I'll pretend I have some Turkish blood in my vein and I promise something that will kick your but. Check out the result in 2 weeks on Soundcloud.<br />

What if I had picked "Ennio Morricone" back to back with de Roubaix? No respite!<br />
<br />
Although I did a thoughtful job with the selection of the 22 themes of this project, by choosing a great variety of genres and influences, I can't predict the order in which they will appear. And that's the funny part!<br />
<br />
But finally, the next theme picked by our lovely Lisa, very much appropriated with her dressing, is : <b>Exotica</b>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qpZmeXwyhhM/VM6talOQZyI/AAAAAAAAAUU/10oXgLLwHHU/s1600/photo-52.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qpZmeXwyhhM/VM6talOQZyI/AAAAAAAAAUU/10oXgLLwHHU/s1600/photo-52.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Oh, cool it sounds like a relief.<br />
<br />
Well, Exotica is maybe one of the most misunderstood genres of music. Politely described as 'Tropical Jazz', it also bears the term -not always with good intent, of 'Easy Listening'. If we really want to be ill-intentionned, let's have a look to the definition given by the All-Music website "(…) <span style="background-color: #cfe2f3;"><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px;">exotica's primary concern is lightweight entertainment, gathering readily identifiable ethnic sounds into a smooth, easily digested pop form. </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px;">The music typically conjures up images of exotic foreign tourist destinations geared toward white Americans, and in that sense, it's sort of the equivalent of a pre-packaged resort …"</span></span></span><br />
Not a very positive view.<br />
<br />
But I'm sure that you have learnt not to trust the right-minded cultural critics unable to put aside their cynical views or concerns about social acceptance. They are certainly not the ones who told you to dig the obscure Stelvio Cipriani soundtracks (no in fact it's me who told you, haha)!<br />
<br />
Ok, yeah there's a lot of awful exotica music out there. But that is true for any genre.<br />
<br />
We'd better listen to one of the most avant-garde, eclectic and prolific artists of the last 30 years, John Zorn, what he has to say in this <a href="http://jazztimes.com/articles/24597-john-zorn-the-working-man">interview</a> about one of his primary sources of influence :<br />
<h4>
<i><span style="font-weight: normal;">JazzTimes: Let’s talk about the Dreamers. I was delightfully surprised by this group. Where is this charming music coming from?</span><br /><span style="font-weight: normal;">John Zorn: Well, it comes from my love for music that does delight and charm. I am a big fan of Les Baxter, Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, the pioneers of </span>exotica<span style="font-weight: normal;">. I’ve been a fan of that music since I was young. It was part of my upbringing; it’s there. You can hear elements of it here and there in my music over time. You hear it in Bar Kokhba; even in things like Godard and Spillane there are moments that sound like that. This Dreamers project, I think, was bringing together all of these beautiful musics that I love, from world music to surf music to exotica music to different kinds of funk and blues. I put all of these things together and created something that, for me, was meant to charm and delight.</span></i></h4>
<b style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 10px; line-height: 13px;"><b></b></b><br />
"Charm and delight". That is two words I'd rather choose to describe what this music is intent for, slightly more respectful than the All-Music's "lightweight entertainment" description. Certainly a matter of point of view and it's true that in this cynical age, it can be difficult to take the "charm and delight" to the first degree and let yourself be charmed by the simple beauty of music.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I'll stick with John Zorn fascination for this genre (and we could also include his good body, Mike Patton, also a fan). For instance, <b>Les Baxter</b> music is everything except the ignorant definition of All-Music. He certainly was a master of his art, a great orchestrator and composer. He defined the genre already with his first album in back in 1951 (!), Ritual of the Savage. Here's one cool track from this album.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<object class="BLOGGER-youtube-video" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0" data-thumbnail-src="https://ytimg.googleusercontent.com/vi/SqJgEJ_JxMg/0.jpg" height="266" width="320"><param name="movie" value="https://youtube.googleapis.com/v/SqJgEJ_JxMg&source=uds" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><embed width="320" height="266" src="https://youtube.googleapis.com/v/SqJgEJ_JxMg&source=uds" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
<br />
<br />
So, did I say it will be an easy theme? Well, I will definitively have to work out some nice tropical textures, or what others may ear as "<span style="background-color: #cfe2f3; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px;"><span style="color: #444444;">readily identifiable ethnic sounds into a smooth, easily digested pop form"...</span></span><br />
Easier said than done.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, I'll let you with one of my favorites Library Music tracks (because you know I've been a lot into it recently), from one holy grail LP, Jungle Obsession (1971) : Tropical by Nino Nardino, a track of post-exotica before it's time, if I can say so. Certainly a starting point for my next theme!…<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/Wn4lotIXJao?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Also, great piece of music (live) by John Zorn featuring Marc Ribot on guitar and fully influenced by Exotica music.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6M856NRXCc0/VLwN7syqwKI/AAAAAAAAAT4/4ubgNUyJ3C4/s1600/photo-50.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6M856NRXCc0/VLwN7syqwKI/AAAAAAAAAT4/4ubgNUyJ3C4/s1600/photo-50.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
François de Roubaix was a French composer. Unfortunately, he had a very short life and quit us in 1975 after a diving accident. He was 36.<br />
<br />
Even with the current soundtracks revival and reissues of many euro-cult composer's work, I'd say François de Roubaix is still very much overlooked. Yes, he is recognized in close-circle enthusiast and in France, but he hasn't got the same attention as some others and no record label have made a serious attempt to put out a consistent discography of his work for film, television, documentary and publicity.<br />
<br />
Surely, he was a real pioneer for many reasons. He was gifted with a real talent for creating original melodies and chord progressions, and he probably got from Morricone the idea to work with sonic textures using many different instruments and devices, from the Jew's harp to the EMS synthesizer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/XkIAue604EU?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
But also, he was a precursor of the home studio recording, playing effectively many instruments with a great sense of experimentation and exploration and doing all the recording in his apartment. Ironically, he was not totally recognized by his fellow contemporary film composers, being an autodidact and a bit of an outsider.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ERpt7niDw6k/VLh1MeHVeHI/AAAAAAAAATk/rlEzq3yNUmQ/s1600/maxresdefault.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ERpt7niDw6k/VLh1MeHVeHI/AAAAAAAAATk/rlEzq3yNUmQ/s1600/maxresdefault.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
How to approach a François de Roubaix theme? Already after picking this theme, I start looking closely to his music trying to identify some characteristics, typical chord progressions, instrumentation, style, etc... So many stuff is going. That's when I say he is overlooked. His music is very heterogeneous, yet you can definitively say there is a 'François de Roubaix' sound. Even if it's full synthesizer beat or folk jazz tune, there is something you know it's him. And that's what I will have to nail in 2 or 3 minutes ! Theme 02 is on its way !!!<br />
<br />

Here we are, the new Orgasmo Sonore project is launched with the first theme picked : 'GIALLO' !<br />
<br />
Some little hands have helped me to pick the first out of 22 themes and it was the word 'Giallo' who came out of the box. It was really a random choice, and I must say I'm happy to start with this theme, as you know the Italian 'yellow' drama music is not so stranger to me.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The term 'giallo' was first used to refer to a italian genre of litterature, typically thriller with cheap yellow book cover, as 'giallo' means 'yellow' in Italian. It also refer to a sub genre of exploitation italian crime movies that had their glory days between 1965 and 1980. What makes it a musical theme is that such specific movies called for an atmospheric and mysterious type of music and maestros like Ennio Morricone, Bruno Nicolai, Stelvio Cipriani or Gianni Ferrio have established the standard.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The great Bruno Nicolai elevated the genre to higher peak, and one could argue he may even have surpassed Ennio in the field. The third album of Orgasmo Sonore was specifically dedicated to the giallo film music of Nicolai. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The music for giallo film is often a mix of dark jazz with chamber music instrumentation (harpsichord, strings, harp, mandolin), with classical influences that will sometime sound baroque, sometime avant-garde.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In some case, the erotic side of these films called for more sensual music but always with the mysterious touch and baroque instrumentation. For some people, this was maybe italian soundtrack at its height.</div>

<br />
<br />
Dear followers,<br />
<br />
This is the time to introduce you to the next Orgasmo Sonore's project for 2015, maybe the most ambitious one since the release of the first album auto-produced and released on vinyl back in 2011!<br />
<br />
This new project will sum up all the experience and knowledge acquired during the production of 4 albums dedicated to the great masters of cult soundtrack and library music. It's now time to use what has been learned and put it in new original material. It's about time, some will say! But then, it needs to be a special kind of project. Actually, let's make this a challenge.<br />
<br />
Under the working name of "Themes International", the challenge will be to compose and record music for 22 randomly selected themes inside a given time of 2 weeks for each theme. Obviously, the themes have been carefully pre-selected, but one cannot predict in which order they will be imposed. These themes are :<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Ennio Morricone</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
John Carpenter</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Stelvio Cipriani</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
François de Roubaix</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Horror </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Giallo</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Italian Library</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Erotische</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Spaghetti Western</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Spy</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
KPM Library</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Vampyros Lesbos</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Blacksploitation</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Persian Funk</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Krautrock</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Psych Turk</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Afro Beat</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Minimal Synth</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Jamaican Dub</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Exotica</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Euro Prog</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
Electro Groove</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: left;">
The themes were selected to cover a wide spectrum of genres and cultures, but one could clearly see a link with soundtrack, library and 70s groove. How surprising? This will be render in full Orgasmo Sonore fashion!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: left;">
The project will start in January with the revealing of the first theme on the Facebook page. You will then be able to hear the result 2 weeks after posted on Soundcloud. The next theme will be picked after and so on, always revealing one at a time. This should take place over the full year of 2015, with a few spare weeks to take some breaks.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: left;">
During the period of 2 weeks, I will need to work with some method. First, I'll study the subject for instrumentation and style, I'll experiment a bit, and I'll record an original song inside the thematic bounds. The song should be probably kept under the bar of 2-3 minutes. 2 weeks is not a lot of time to elaborate complex piece of music, but library composer were able to record complete album in a session of 3 hours so I should be able to come up with interesting material! Well, that will be the challenge…</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: left;">
So see you all in 2015 and wish me good luck in the realization of this new exciting project !!!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: left;">

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">It</span><span style="font-size: large;"> may be one of the most unknown facts of the whole history of recorded music. Something the general public could have totally missed, thanks to the many labels who revealed their vaults to the collectors and DJ. Now, this way of doing music is long gone : recording music for films, TV, documentary or radio and pressing albums out of it. Album intended for studios, film directors, TV channels, distributed inside the industry and never released commercially</span><span style="font-size: large;"> for public. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">All of this music could have disappeared, totally, if not of a few deranged mind collectors who had their own ideas about this secret music. That there could be some good stuff to discover. How crazy! Generic music, background music, "musak", elevator music, what the heck!? Why not forget about all of this? Who needs to listen to background music for adds? </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Well, have you ever noticed the music in a 70's add? Or a late 60's TV show? or an early 80's sport program? Don't you remember the drums rolls and funky music all over the place on TV? That strange synthesizer music during TV intermission and obscure documentary and during children programs? Oh yeah, now you remember. Maybe it would worth to have look in case we find a few exceptional pieces of music, don't you think?</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">So, that was some of these collectors thought and that's what they did, plunging into this vast and unknown territory of the music industry. And some of them, never came back! The discovery was shocking, unexpected, perilous : Library Music is maybe one of the most underestimated genres of music! It goes beyond the simple background music it's supposedly intended for. The music is fresh, original, bold, funky, experimental, groovy, tight. The quality of the recording is high. The musicianship is high. And there seems to have no end to it. Imagine a big amount of records, a number you think there could be. Try to figure as many albums as you think there is out there from this industry. And then, multiply this number by 100. Really.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />

Nini Nardini - Tropicalia. It was first unfolded by Luke Vibert in his "Nuggets" compilation. This is so sensually groovy that your speakers will melt and your dinner guest will suddenly wants to get naked.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">The total number of labels alone who produced this music is still hard to figure. They were coming from the UK, from France, from Germany, from Italy, from Canada, from the USA. We just start to have a complete figure now that the collectors are ripping the vinyl and make them available on blog, list them on place like Discogs.com. We just now are seeing the himalayan amount of music to explore, in every existing genre.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<div style="text-align: center;">
April Orchestra présente Caravelli (vol. 16) - one of the most sought-after library albums, this masterpiece blend strings and a menacing bass in a way that will freak the shit out of you. A soundtrack for a horror film that never was.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Digging for Library music is like a drug. Once you get into it, you may not escape unscathed. Your social life will suffer. And your budget too! First of all, you will find nobody to discuss about your last listens. Because nobody knows about Library music. Then, you will see no end to the quest. And albums are selling for utter high amount of money. One song leads to another, albums after albums. You press play, and you never know what's next. Just a few evocative titles wrapped in some thematic album. Songs are short. You start to get into it, the music is growing on you, and then it's gone. You move to the next one, to the next album. Endlessly.</span><br />

Telemusic 78 - Automation. The french touch before the french touch with this late 70s electronic library record composed by studio bassist Sauveur Mallia. A lot of library record from France, UK or Italy feature experimentation with synthesizers</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">I know some of you know a lot about Library music, others may be wondering what I'm talking about.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Well, this is where <b>ORGASMO SONORE's</b> new project arrives : <b>Revisiting Obscure Library Music</b>. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">After 3 albums doing the soundtrack revival thing, it's time for a new horizon. A new "obscure" field to reveal. Library and film music have many things in common. In Fact, a lot of film composers did works for library music labels : Ennio Morricone, Bruno Nicolai, Stelvio Cipriani, François de Roubaix... Piero Umiliani alone did so many Library records under different pseudonyms, it's beyond belief. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Some of them may appear in this project. And definitively some new names too. Many ultra talented and professional composers made a career exclusively in library music.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">So the first step in this project is a work of selection. Spanning into hundreds of vinyl rips and finding the potential Orgasmic interpretation. Then, work in the studio. And why not an album!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: x-large;">So stay tune, good music is coming!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>

The album will have a gatefold cover and was made from rare vintage posters, thanks to giallo collector Mike Jordan. The editing of the album was made by Davidfromlille, a steady collaborator.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KY4OUGn--bc/Uaodno206iI/AAAAAAAAAI4/fZvfEEGJzfc/s1600/pochette+d-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="316" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KY4OUGn--bc/Uaodno206iI/AAAAAAAAAI4/fZvfEEGJzfc/s640/pochette+d-1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Now, if you like what you are seeing, I guarantee you you will love what you will be hearing! This album has been made with all the passion and love il Maestro Nicolai deserved, a composer who is outrageously overlooked. The man is no less than one of the greatest orchestrators and conductors the film industry ever had, and as a composer, he gave us some very great soundtracks that are unfortunately difficult to find or even never properly released.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Recently Digitmovies released some of his soundtracks on CD allowing us to access to a part of his body of works. However, for vinyl collectors, most of his scores are still unavailable on this medium, which is a shame.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The mission of Orgasmo Sonore has always been to highlight the work of forgotten composers and cult soundtracks. This tribute would like to bring attention over this particular composer. It's indeed the first time (after 2 albums Revisiting Obscure Film Music Volume 1 and 2) that Orgasmo Sonore interprets the music of only one specific composer. And this album will be available <b>on vinyl only</b>! 25 minutes EP at 45 RPM.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The challenge was high. The music of Bruno Nicolai is jazzy with full of contemporary classical music influences and with a very large instrumentation. The rythm section relied upon some of the best italian studio musicians. The arrangements were various using different tempos and atmospheres for the same song. The sound aesthetic is totally vintage and you often feel all the band has been recorded with only one mic in the middle of the room, yet everything sound clear and groovy.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The work took about 6 months to record and to mix. 6 songs were carefully selected from the soundtracks he made for a genre of italian movies called <i>giallo, </i>all scored between 1971 and 1975. These movies often cast a mysterious murderer with black gloves and sensual women doomed to be his victims. One of the key figures of these movies is the beautiful and iconic cult actress Edwige Fenech, with her irresistible dark looking eyes and habit to undress in all kind of situations. Giallo, Edwige, Bruno... This is the perfect combo celebrating the art of Italian Cinema of the 70s.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It's with great attention to details and by working to understand the keys of Nicolai's music that this project has been approached. A great deal of works has been to find the proper sounds. For example the bass I used for the recording was a vintage 73 Fender Precision (merci Fred Charest) to help achieve the typical bass sound of the time. As I could not afford to bring a real harpsichord in my studio, It took me long time to finally find a superbly sampled italian harpsichord with full range of velocities. It's was like playing the real thing!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Bruno Nicolai music has been introduced to me by Cineploit founder Alex Wank, at a time where only Ennio Morricone existed in my world and every other italian film composers were sub-Ennio emulations. I was obviously in the darkness and thanks to Alex who one day told me "Bruno is not only in the shadow of Ennio, but he may as well surpass the master in some part of his works." When we know that Ennio was busy writing one score after the others in his home, he had to rely upon Bruno in the studio for the recording and so it would not be a wrong idea to say that Bruno Nicolai has more to do with the italian soundtrack "sound" that we may believe.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Maestro Bruno Nicolai, thank you for your inspiration in this project. My ambition is no less than presenting the best Bruno Nicolai tribute people will ever heard. Let them now decide if I achieve my goal.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

With the collaboration of my friend VJ n.Code, we recently organized a live event for the release of the album Revisiting Obscure Film Music Volume 2. We played the backing tracks from the albums on top of which I played a track of guitar while n.Code was remixing videos from the movies. The result was very great and the sound was terrific (lot better than the recording of the video above). People seemed to enjoy the concept of film music and live projection. All in all, it's been a very great evening with friends and film music fans.<br />
The set was about 35 minutes (no interruption) and people were asking for more. We hope to have the occasion of doing a longer version in a near future.<br />
<br />
This is the track listing of the set we did :<br />
<br />
1. Lucio Fulci - Intro<br />
2. Fabio Frizzi - Zombi 2<br />
3. Ennio Morricone - La Seconda Caccia<br />
4. Piero Umiliani - Chaser<br />
5. Bruno Nicolai - The Case of the Bloody Iris<br />
6. François de Roubaix - Les Dunes d'Ostende<br />
7. Stelvio Cipriani - Un'Ombra Nell'Ombra<br />
8. Stelvio Cipriani & Goblin - Incubi Ricorrenti<br />
9. John Carpenter - Escape from New-York<br />
10. Walter Rizzati - Bronx 1990<br />

<em><strong>( I</strong> should have posted this in November 2011, but it got lost... Well, it's not too late to wrap up on volume 1 and say some thanks. )</em></div>

<br />
<br />
<strong>Finally</strong>, I'm done with the LP volume 1 production ! It's there. In boxes, in my basement and I've been able to ship a bunch so far, thanks to internet that make this kind of restricted audience project possible.<br />
<br />
<strong>Unfortunately</strong>, I've not been able to maintain a proper journal of this adventure. I would have love to share all the details and experiences of this long journey - and trust me there is a lot interesting details to share - but time is missing and one have to put priorities and focus on the making of the project, not the telling.<br />
<br />
<strong>Maybe</strong>, now that routine is back at a more normal level, I could eventually wrote some chapters of the making. You know, to fill the United Record Pressing 10 pages forms that specified every details of the vinyl manufacturing was a very demanding tasks and required attention. I think I've made my homeworks for all of this. Production, mastering, art, manufacturing, shipping costs, promotion. Ask me !<br />
<br />
<strong>But</strong> for now, I would basically like to thanks some people who helped me at different stages. In fact, if there's something that I gained with this project (certainly not money) it's new friendship from all over the world. <br />
<br />
<strong>Thanks </strong>to <strong>David</strong> (Davidfromlille) for the cool videos and the awesome artwork for the album cover. Thanks to <strong>Alex Wank </strong>from Totem Records/Cineploit who was so enthusiast he ordered me a complete box of LPs that he spread with his Austrian and German fellows at gun shot speed. Thanks to Rick and everyone at <strong>Dusty Grooves </strong>who received my project with great attention and got the LP available from the best online music store. Thanks to Jocke from <strong>Record Heaven </strong>and their tentacle-esque distribution network. Thanks to <strong>DJ Alfonso </strong>who played some songs from the album at one of his Rendez-Vous thematic night. <strong>Thanks </strong>to everyone who bought the LP and share it with friends and sent me feedback on it. I always liked 70's early 80's synth music and I hope this mix can show how highly evocative and athmospheric it still sounds today. Mainly euro stuffs, French library, Italian soundtracks and even some African TV gingle by François de Roubaix !<br />

Some electronic soundtracks and library gems that I decided to compiled for my pleasure. This is influenced by mixes from the like of DJ Alfonso and Finders Keepers dude and I picked from the early electronic stuff between 75-85, golden age of analog synth. A nice balance beetween the dark and the cheasy, the emotionnal and the cold, the downtempo and the uptempo.<br />
Some hard to find songs, especially the last one, a real pain to find !<br />

<br />
One year ago, I wrote on a piece of paper the title of a dozen of film music tunes that were all musics that have influenced me at some point in my life. I filled the page with titles from the soundtracks of my youth, like John Carpenter's Escape from New-York, but also with things that I had discovered more recently such as the music of composer Stelvio Cipriani. <br />
<br />
The goal was to pick my guitar and bass, a couple of computer programs and plug-ins, and with the help of my little home studio, to make a re-interpretation of these classic themes and see how I could render them. Initially, the idea was to arrange the songs in a way that I could eventually play live with a 4-5 pieces band. It quickly turned out to be a more complicated adventure when I used more than 6 different guitar tracks in the first song I recorded !<br />
<br />
That first song was Ennio Morricone's Mystic and Severe recorded in april/may 2010.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-01uoajXJArY/Tho2_9_oXsI/AAAAAAAAABk/2WWdEvtFruM/s1600/DauomoauomoOST.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" m$="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-01uoajXJArY/Tho2_9_oXsI/AAAAAAAAABk/2WWdEvtFruM/s1600/DauomoauomoOST.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/zIv5TZRiApY?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br />
Now, one year later, I recorded practically all the songs that I had wrote on my list and even more !<br />
<br />
<strong>Mixing for vinyl</strong><br />
<br />
On the way of doing this project, I came with the idea to produce a LP out of these. Would I be able to make it, from start to end, eventually handling in my hand my own vinyl ? That was a nice challenge.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uu_GnPxjCjs/Tho3qZeyzUI/AAAAAAAAABo/hKpJw8PckEA/s1600/Black.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" m$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uu_GnPxjCjs/Tho3qZeyzUI/AAAAAAAAABo/hKpJw8PckEA/s320/Black.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
With that goal in mind, I had to make some homeworks about the production. Indeed, you don't mix for vinyl like you would mix for a CD. The mixing process follows the recording with the purpose of balancing the levels and creatively enhance the tracks. At the end everything must blend in a consistent piece of music. You will EQ, compress, add reverb and effects, automate faders, cut and edit, group, arrange tracks together, route things to channel, pan left and right, etc... The objective is to create a final stereo track that will be sent to the mastering, wich is the last processing step before printing on the medium. In fact, you don't mix for vinyl with as much precaution as when you master for vinyl with very specific considerations (we'll see that later). But like in any job, it's good to understand what will happen next (in that case, at the mastering stage) so you can already adress certain things correctly and avoid many undesirable back and forth with the mastering engineer.<br />
<br />
These considerations would take more space to explain in details.Quickly, they are such issues like : average sound level, maximum peak level, low frequency stereo phase, high frequency control, etc... Music is a lot of math and physic you know...<br />
<br />
For the ones who are interested, here is a nice list of things to keep in mind when mixing for a vinyl release :<br />
<a href="http://www.totalsonic.net/vinyl.htm">http://www.totalsonic.net/vinyl.htm</a><br />
<br />
In the meantime, I subscribed to an overnight music recording and mixing course which turns out to be a very good thing to help my project to evolve. In fact, at the time I'm writing these lines, I'm still working on my mixes, because for most of them I just started over from scratch 2-3 times, always trying to enhance my production with the new skills I've learned in my courses. This means one thing : what will end up on the LP should be of a higher level of production than everything I uploaded on the internet so far (on Youtube for instance). So once you'll put the needle on and ear the comforting crackling of the vinyl, the music shall comes with all the warmth and presence that justify the use of this medium.<br />
<br />
Well, that's what I'm still working on... :)Orgasmo Sonorehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04473480113912945835noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8388574549955967149.post-42895975208546094642011-07-01T08:32:00.000-07:002011-07-02T09:10:57.237-07:00Orgasmo Sonore goes Vinyl !<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1poZ5_OwD9k/Tg3n8pgFy6I/AAAAAAAAABg/EbPftz4ydrA/s1600/Black.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" i$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1poZ5_OwD9k/Tg3n8pgFy6I/AAAAAAAAABg/EbPftz4ydrA/s320/Black.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>After more than one year of work on this project, I decided to take the big road : to release my music on the good old LP vinyl. There is no ambition to take over the world, really. It's a very personnal obsession : I HAVE to do this. And because there is a hell lot of details to take into account in the process, I thought I could share the experiences of the making. <br />
<br />
When I say there is a hell lot of details, you have no idea. Let me remind you that I do this as a part time independant producer, between family and job. It's a lot of personnal investment that involve time and money and that can be frustrating for people around you. If my experience can inspire other people who are in the same kind of situation, with similar goals, I'd be very happy.<br />
<br />
I'm already at a pretty advanced stage in the process. Enough advanced to affirm that this is going to happen. There will be a limited edition of Orgasmo Sonore - Revisiting Obscure Film Music Volume 1 available soon. But for the sake of that blog, I will rewind back a bit in time so you'll know every step that I had to deal with. These steps include :<br />
<br />
<ol><li>Recording of the songs</li>
<li>Mixing and production</li>
<li>Copyright matters</li>
<li>Mastering and cutting the lacquer</li>
<li>Making of the cover design</li>
<li>Printing of the jacket</li>
<li>Pressing the LP</li>
<li>Release and distribution</li>
</ol> As I said, I am dealing personaly with everyone of these steps, but along the course of it, I am also calling for the help of professionals in the different fields. One of the best advantages of auto-production is that I can take all the decisions with whom I'm going to work with. I have 100% control of my project. However, It can be confusing to wear multiple hats, sometimes the musician, sometimes the producer and sometimes the sound engineer. So for instance, I will definitively send the music to someone else for the mastering. And I can also count on one of my good internet bodies Davidfromlille to design the cover. Working alone is fun, working with collaborators at specific step is clever.<br />
<br />
Now, curious about this project ? Let me give you a nice teaser. Following is the complete and definitve songs list that will goes on this volume 1.<br />
<br />

<br />
Stay tuned for more details about it !!Orgasmo Sonorehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04473480113912945835noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8388574549955967149.post-68872233685776222602011-04-20T09:36:00.000-07:002011-04-20T09:36:46.407-07:00The Big Gundown Cover - Now what ?For my few fellow readers who don't know it, the result of my interpretation of The Big Gundown is now online on Youtube with a nice video montage from my friend David from France :<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><object width="320" height="266" class="BLOGGER-youtube-video" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0" data-thumbnail-src="http://i.ytimg.com/vi/nW4_UbaIAw4/0.jpg"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nW4_UbaIAw4?f=user_uploads&c=google-webdrive-0&app=youtube_gdata" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><embed width="320" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nW4_UbaIAw4?f=user_uploads&c=google-webdrive-0&app=youtube_gdata" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></embed></object></div><br />
What happened with the blog making-of is, at some point, I had to choose to concentrate myself entirely on the cover making itself or I would have died trying to show a day-by-day description of what I do, how and why. The reason is things became complicated at some point and I had to go throught a serious amount of recording to push the song on another level. It' good to mention that creation is not always a linear thing and I found myself splitted between the will to make a structured tutorial and the need to plunge myself in the music making with all the improvisation and uncertainty it involves.<br />
<br />
My apologies for that, but here is a disorder list of post-mortem though about the interpretation, as a sort of conclusion.<br />
<br />
<ul><li>As you can testify by listening to the song, I haven't been precious on guitar tracking. For many musical lines that were originaly played by either strings or brasses, I voluntarily choose to run them on the electric guitar. There's two reasons for that. The first may seems obvious but I didn't want to make a instrument per instrument version. The second reason is I felt this music would deliver well if played a bit heavy on the side thus replacing the orchestral epicness of the original by electric guitar wall of sound epicness. I used a lot of doubling and tripling of the tracks (recording more than once the same line and blend them in the mix), I tried to pan (left and right use of the stereo) things with some logic and I did a lot of high pass filtering on the guitar tracks to avoid mudiness and crushing of the bass. In some place, you can hear as much as 6 guitar tracks overlayed simultaneously.</li>
<li>I did some vocal takes, doubling and tripling the takes of lower and upper octave, trying to achieve some kind of choral feel. However, my vocal abilities are limited and I was lazy trying to work that for hours in the search of the perfect take. I decided cleverly to not put them in front of the mix as much as the original. There was enough electric guitar to play the role of fronting the music so vocals were pushed in the background. At 0:60, it's a take of me pitched one octave higher than it was recorded. Hey, I can't sing that high !</li>
<li>A complete list of the instrumentation I used includes : vocals, virtual drums (BFD Ludwig kit), Godin electric guitar with Amplitude amp emulator, acoustic guitar (doubling the intro theme with electric), Ibanez bass on which I put some foam under the bridge to mute the notes sustain and gives a 60's-70's feel (listen to the bass lick at around 1:20 to clearly hear the effect), a little organ freebie called MK III, Sampletank player for piano (free), Pro-53 VST synth (emulation of the Prophet-5) and a bell sample.</li>
</ul>Orgasmo Sonorehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04473480113912945835noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8388574549955967149.post-87377646479550657802011-03-21T08:16:00.000-07:002011-03-21T08:16:47.984-07:00The Big Gundown cover - first bass track<span style="font-size: x-small;">If you haven't read the other posts :</span><br />
<a href="http://orgasmo-sonore.blogspot.com/2011/03/making-of-big-gundown-ennio-morricone.html"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Making Of : The Big Gundown - Ennio Morricone Tribute</span></a><br />
<a href="http://orgasmo-sonore.blogspot.com/2011/03/big-gundown-cover-guitar-track.html"><span style="font-size: x-small;">The Big Gundown Cover : Guitar Track</span></a><br />

<br />
<br />
The main guitar and the piano are now recorded. I will introduce the electric bass that overtake after the piano and complete the opening sequence. Later we're going to add the drums and some other overdubs. <br />
But what about the bass in this song ? Well apparently there is no electric bass, but if you pay attention you can ear what seems to be cellos in the background, but you really need to listen carefully.<br />
<br />
*TIPS - If you're looking to identify a particular instrument in a busy mix, you can try to do some equalisation filtering to isolate the instrument. Althought in those days there is advanced software that can litteraly remove vocal track or grab a string line out of a song, EQ filtering is a quick and easy way that can help. In this case, I'm looking to identify the cellos' part, a low frequency instrument, so I have put a low pass filter over the song to get rid of all high frequency instruments. This will help me to focus on the low end only. Then it's easier to listen and pick out the line.<br />
<br />
If I trust my ears, here is what the cellos (or is it a double bass ?) does after the piano, starting at measure 12 :<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; font-size: x-small;">|----------|-----------|-----------|-----------|-------------|<br />

|--------------|-------------|---------------|-------------|</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Now watch the video to see what it gives with the electric bass :</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> <iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxPg3vI-u7k1jumWap3DfgVLpAhUGdgG-N-IKgQQRMHO20jpKYVOSufqKLANLouO6nneDBBqsU9a_9I0-LH1w' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">OK, I'm not very happy with this audio recording. I will do some other takes for the bass part and choose a better one later. This is time to say you always have to look for a good performance and do multiple takes for a given part. I always do 5 to 10 takes before reaching the G spot with a performance. Patience is what you need and don't be satisfied with a recording that is 1. not sounding good and is badly recorded and 2. is not as tight as you'd wish. Although we will see later how to correct some of these issues in the mix, always try to have the best out of your recording sessions.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As you can see, all my recording are concentring on the opening sequence only. Don't worry, I will work the other parts of the song later. The next post will actually be about the drums tracks and I will write down a drums track that will help as a reference from the start to the end of the song.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">NEXT POST : drums track for the whole song.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<br />
Now that I sorted out the opening guitar track and wrote down the partition, I did a little recording in FL Studio (more on the recording process later) so it became my first recorded reference track.<br />
<br />
However I quickly felt I had to lay down the piano track to get a better feeling of the timing and to see how the main guitar track was acting against the piano. What is the song structure in term of tempo and beat ? It's fun to play a line without any structure in mind, just playing it with foot taping but as far as you're going to record and overdub many tracks, it's better to work with some kind of defined grid and tempo.<br />
<br />
I set the metronome at 106 bpm which is the same as the original. The tempo is in 4/4 so I theorically have quarter notes 4 beats per bar.<br />
<br />
Well, the piano is actually the instrument that initiate the song. With a large 3 octave A chord. There was something that intuitively intrigue me with the timming of the piano vs the guitar introduction. Try to sit down with real song, wait for the piano chords and then tap with your hand when you think the guitar is going to come. Not easy isn't ? It's because the guitar is not coming after an exact count of beat, the guitar enter after 2 and 1/2 beat following the piano ! Welcome in the world of Ennio.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Watch this short video to understand how to start the guitar against the piano</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dw7E-ABdUP-3BzWVLdIaQH_GoWO8FClnqGs41NqFBKbNnbZrkjCpV2xcSeTCCqH_crm7T_HLfTI5gHGYs7msw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The piano is not very difficult to get. Being a poor pianist myself (but with good ears) I've been able to quickly lay down the partition. I recorded throught my MIDI controller keyboard with SampleTank free VST piano (not the best out there I admit). Check the video to catch the piano partition :</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dyu47ZH_zYZrnmrvsNLwbIZMJaY6fQRE7nJEsVLPrLpGqNr8pe6hZRBna7DZMkQVScV8dN07IAbh_8fE2c4NQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Ok good enough so far ! After that part, the piano seems to disappear and somehow is replaced by the cellos for the following sequences. There is no electric bass in the original recording, rather some background cellos that seems to be buried in the mix under male vocals, rolling bass drum and brasses. So that's where I will start to deviate from the original by introducing a nice foreground electric bass.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><strong>Next Post : Electric bass - first track</strong></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
